eVysor, protective mask for riding: which visor, which tint, which protections?

April 20, 2022

eVysor glasses are designed for working horses. They are particularly recommended for protecting the eyes of horses with ophthalmic or photosensitive conditions. All lenses are UV-treated, but there are differences between the visors available.

The different filter categories of the eVysor mask

Visors are available in several filter categories, i.e., levels of light transmission and therefore shade density, ranging from index 0 to index 3.
A category 0 corresponds to light transmission greater than 80%, i.e., transparent or nearly transparent glass.

The higher the category index, the lower the light transmission. For example, category 3 is the most commonly used for our sunglasses (between 8 and 20% light transmission).
For humans, there is a category 4 reserved for use on the high seas or in the mountains, which is prohibited for driving (3 to 8% transmission).

Below are the different visor tints and associated indices (eQuick manufacturer's website):

visor color category / index light transmission
transparent 0 98%
orange 1 46%
blue 2 42%
green 2 38%
rainbow (rainbow) 2 20%
dark (dark) 3 10%

Which shade of eVysor visor should I choose for my horse?

Except for transparent visors, all visors are gray! They vary in shade, but they are all gray. The mirrored (or flash) coating applied to the front of the lens protects against scratches (and allows you to see the lens protection index at a glance).

The choice of shade depends on the discipline practiced with your horse and its sensitivity to light.

  • If you compete in show jumping (CSO, CCE, etc.), please note that eye protection is not permitted. If your horse is not photosensitive, train it with clear lenses so that it will be in the same conditions regardless of the weather, both during training and on competition day.
  • Are you more of a leisurely rider? All speeds are acceptable. However, remember to slow down when moving from bright sunlight into the shade of the woods. When we enter a tunnel, we also need to adjust to the darkness. Keep in mind that this adjustment takes a little longer for your steed, even though it can see much better than we can in the dark!
  • Do you mainly work on a white arena? Is your horse severely bothered by the brightness, does it suffers from headshaking, or closes or squints its eyes, it is best to choose a tinted visor. We recommend the dark visor. Even though it has a rating of 3, it can still be used in slightly overcast weather.

What size should I choose for my Equidiva mask/hat?

All measurements are approximate and are provided for informational purposes only.

Size guide - Premium or Helios mask

Using a tape measure (or a piece of string that you will measure afterwards), measure around your horse's head as shown in the photo:

Mask size Head circumference
XS - Shetland 84 cm
S - Pony 90 cm
M - Cob 94 cm
L - Full 100 cm
XL - XFull 110 cm
If your horse's head measurement falls between two sizes, we recommend choosing the larger of the two.

Size guide - Equivizor masks (Lightweight, Arso, Convalescence models)

For these masks, the main measurement is the width of your horse's forehead. To do this, you need to add together three measurements:

  1. Start at the outer corner of one eye and measure upwards at a slight angle to the middle of the forehead (measurement A).
  2. continue along the front of your horse(measurement B),
  3. Finish the measurement by directing the line slightly downward to the outer corner of the other eye (measurement C). This way, you will measure the widest part of your horse's forehead.

Add these 3 measurements (A+B+C) to obtain the size of your horse's forehead.

IMPORTANT: Do not measure directly from one eye to the other, as this will likely result in an inaccurate measurement.

Mask size Forehead size
XS - Shetland 7.5–8.7 inches
S - Pony 8.7–11.4 inches
M - Cob 11.5–13.5 inches
L - Full 13-14 inches
XL - XFull 15-17 inches

Take these 3 steps:

Size A B C
XS (large Shetland) 60 cm 84 cm 20 cm
S (pony) 70 cm 96 cm 9.5 inches
M (cob) 70 cm 96 cm 9.25 inches
L (full) 75 cm 105 cm 27 cm

If your horse is between sizes, we recommend choosing the smaller size.
